With SketchUp, Google’s free CAD program, you can produce 3-D renderings,
exploded views and front, side and top dimensioned working drawings – all from
the same model. SketchUp has a learning curve but if you can pick it up you will
soon see how this very clever program can be used to your advantage as an
indispensable woodworking tool. This is primarily a lecture session but you are
welcome to bring your laptop and follow along. If you bring your laptop you
should also have a mouse with a scroll wheel and the most recent free version of
SketchUp installed. (www.sketchup.com)

Whether you're having trouble getting started or are bogged down in the design,
fabrication or assembly phase of a project this hands-on, unstructured
lab/workshop is for you. Curt will answer your questions and provide the training
you need to keep you moving along. Instruction will be consistent with your
ability, experience and the tools that you have available. Where appropriate I’ll
provide guidance in the design and construction of jigs that will be helpful to
safely and accurately complete your project. We can meet in your shop or mine.
CAD – Computer Aided Design Part 1 – Introduction
We will discuss what CAD, Computer Aided Design, is and what it can do for
the average woodworker. We will discuss the pros and cons of using CAD as
well as the pros and cons of various CAD programs. We will direct our
discussion primarily to a very basic, inexpensive and easy to use CAD program,
DeltaCad. You should leave the class with an understanding of how CAD
programs work, what you can do with them, whether or not they will be of a
benefit to you in your shop and be ready for CAD Part 2 - the Hands On Class.
CAD – Computer Aided Design Part 2 – Hands On
Bring your laptops. We will provide you with a trial version of one of the simplest
and easiest to use CAD programs, DeltaCad. You will learn how to use the
elements of this program as you produce a working drawing of a workbench.
You should leave the class with an understanding of how to actually use a CAD
program to design or redesign your next project. You will be able to decide if you
want to stick with your drawing board, purchase this basic $40 CAD program
from the supplier or instead pursue a more advanced and costly CAD system.
Elements of Woodworking Design
If you are using “store bought” plans rather than designing your own projects you
might be missing out on half the fun. While designing your own projects isn’t for
everyone, when you do you will have an increased sense of satisfaction and
accomplishment. We will discuss what’s involved in designing or redesigning
your own projects while at the same time ensuring that the project can be
completed safely with the tools you have and be within your ability and
experience level.
Making Furniture for American Girl® Sized Dolls
You can buy American Girl sized doll furniture or make it yourself. Making it
yourself can rejuvenate your Christmas or Holiday spirit, save you money and
provide priceless satisfaction. Since many of the tools used are child safe you
can even have your daughter or granddaughter “help” you in the process.
This session will include detailed instructions and drawings for making a doll
bed, a nightstand, a chair and table for an 18” doll.
Since not everyone has a fully equipped shop we will discuss various designs,
low cost alternative hand tools and sources of pre-cut wood that can be used
while still providing a fine job.
